Nebelung Cat

The Nebelung cat is a small to medium-sized domestic cat with medium-length, plush hair.

Origin and Breed History

It was developed in the USA in the 1980s. Her first breeder gave her the name Nebelung because the color of her fur is supposed to be reminiscent of a bluish-gray fog. The color of a Nebelung cat is always blue, more precisely blue-gray. It is descended from the Russian blue cat, which was crossed with an unspecified long-haired cat. This practice resulted in a medium-long-haired Russian blue. There have always been breeders who endeavored to shape their own peculiarities on the basis of the attractive Russian blue cat.

In this way, three lines were created within the Russian Blue alone. The American type is considered to be the most elegant of these, medium-sized and much lighter in the coat, almost silver in color. Cats of the American type of the Russian Blue were probably used to justify the Nebelung. In the USA, the Nebelung was recognized as a breed by individual associations, for example by The International Cat Association (TICA) in 1997. It has not yet been recognized by the international Fédération Internationale Féline (FiFe) based in Europe. This extremely beautiful cat is very rarely seen in Germany.

Description

The Nebelung is small to the medium-sized pedigree cat. She has a slim, long body and should appear graceful, the legs fine and high, the neck long and straight. Nevertheless, like tomcats, cats should be well muscled. Male cats can weigh 3 to 6 kilograms, cats 2.5 to 4 kilograms. She has a double coat of medium length. It should be longer from front to back. It should be suitable for any weather. The texture should appear fine and silky. This is what the TICA standard demands. Only uniform shades of blue are permitted as colors.

A silver ticking is desirable, meaning a fine, barely visible ringing or banding of the individual hair, which in the overall view creates a silvery, iridescent sheen. In any case, the fur must be of a single color. The eyes should be very large and green or greenish in color. Your ears should be big. The tail should be quite long and show strong hair growth. The hair on the tail should be longer than that on the body. In the case of fog, it can take 2 years for the coat and color to mature and thus its final appearance.

Temperament and Essence

The Nebelung is like the Russian Blue is a very balanced, calm cat. She can develop close bonds with her humans and makes a good family cat. Nebelung cats like to move around in nature like any house cat, but their urge to do so is not as strongly developed. She likes to play very much – suitable cat toys such as a game rod or a feather stick are a must. She is very cuddly and you especially like to stroke and cuddle her just because of her lovely appearance and her fluffy fur. Nebelung cats are extremely easy to get along with and get along with other animal housemates without any problems – provided both sides have had the chance to get used to each other.

Attitude

The Nebelung is a calm house cat. The cat breed is very suitable for the apartment and does not have to be outdoors to feel comfortable. She is intelligent and watches her surroundings closely. The otherwise calm breed amazes at its great jumping ability. So she can easily open the handle of a door. You have to keep that in mind when keeping them. Otherwise, it is undemanding and frugal with regard to its keeping conditions. But she needs an intimate relationship with her two-legged friends. She loves life together with people or the animal partners in her family.

Upbringing

The Nebelung is easy to train. Sometimes quite stormy and cheeky in youth, it becomes much calmer after a year. If it comes from a reputable breeder who has looked after and socialized parent animals and kittens well, then it will fit into the rules and habits of its family by itself. With a little guidance, she can be house-trained quickly and easily.

Care and Health

The Nebelung cat’s coat needs regular brushing. With a little feeling and skill, brushing fur can be turned into a ritual of social bonding that is emotionally good for cats and people alike.

Diseases Typical of the Breed

Inbreeding is a big problem due to Nebelung’s very small gene pool.

Nutrition / Feed

The Nebelung is usually a problem-free border for a cat.

Life Expectancy

A Nebelung can live to be 12 years. Inbreeding drastically shortens life expectancy. However, exact data are not available.

Buy Nebelung Cat

If you want to get a Nebelung cat, you should look around at the breeder’s site. You should make sure that parent animals and kittens grow up in good circumstances, especially with a close social connection to the human family. You should look at the family tree. No ancestor should appear twice here in order to rule out excessive inbreeding. Both parents should definitely be tested negative for the hereditary diseases common in pedigree cats. Reputable breeders indicate this on their own in their advertisements. Of course, the kittens should be vaccinated, dewormed, and chipped several times. Seriously bred kittens of this breed should cost around 700 euros.
