Origins and History of the Nebelung
The Nebelung is a relatively new breed that was developed in the United States in the 1980s. The breed was created by breeding a black domestic shorthair cat with a Russian Blue cat, which resulted in a litter of kittens with long, blue-gray fur. The breeder, Cora Cobb, named the breed Nebelung, which means “creature of the mist” in German, because of their misty blue-gray appearance. The Nebelung was officially recognized by The International Cat Association (TICA) in 1987.
The Nebelung’s history is still being written, as breeders continue to work to refine the breed’s characteristics. The Nebelung is still a rare breed, with only a few hundred registered cats in the world. However, their popularity is growing as more people discover their beauty and charm.
