#4 The modern name “bulldog” was first heard only in 1609. It was used by the playwright Ben Johnson in the play The Silent Woman.

#5 Literally “bulldog” is translated from English as “bull dog”. The name is associated with the main use of the breed in medieval England, where an old pastime was very popular – dog baiting of large animals, especially bulls.

#6 It is known that King James I of England once selected one of his most fierce lions and released him on two bulldogs. The dogs threw themselves on the lion, not yielding to him in courage, and, in the end, knocked the predator onto his back.
