#10 The Rat Terrier’s coat is short, smooth and shiny. Usually white coat color predominates, one-colored coat without white markings is not considered purebred.
In addition, colors such as black and tan or red and tan are undesirable where white coat color is not present. Other than that, all variations of piebald (pied) are desirable. With this staining, large spots in the base color stand out sharply from the white background. From a biological point of view, Piebalds have a dark base color with white markings, but Rat Terriers are allowed to have more of these.

The proportion of white fur should be between 10% and 90%. The spots can be distributed freely over the body, a blaze on the face is neither preferred nor disadvantaged.
All colors also occur with red-brown tan markings on the muzzle. Tricolor Rat Terriers look confusingly similar to English Jack Russell Terriers.
#11 To this day, the Rat Terrier is part of the typical American farm image: It was created from crosses between various European hunting dog breeds and was still to be found on almost every farm in the country as a rat catcher in the 1940s.
It is said that a single Rat Terrier can clean up a rat-infested yard in a matter of hours. A single Rat Terrier is said to have killed up to 2,500 rats in one day.
#12 What do Teddy Roosevelt and Rat Terriers have in common?
Teddy Roosevelt named rat terriers and the Teddy Roosevelt terriers, both formerly belonging to the feists.
Contrary to many reports, Teddy Roosevelt never owned a Rat Terrier or a Teddy Roosevelt Terrier.
His dogs Skip (a black-and-tan Feist), Jack (a Manchester Terrier), and Scamp (likely a Fox Terrier) are among the progenitors of the modern Feist strains, which were named after the former President for this reason.
