Although Australian Shepherds have a reputation for needing a wide-open space, they do very well in the city as long as they get enough stimulation and exercise of course. However, they are not apartment dogs. They need at least a small yard so they can vent a little of their tremendous energy.
This herding dog’s penetrance toward livestock can spill over into its home, and unless its owner is timid or inexperienced, the dog will dominate the family. This breed requires a strict and confident owner – if you’ve never owned a dog before, Aussies are probably not a good choice.
Australian Shepherds shed an average amount and their coat requires regular grooming, including weekly brushing to keep it clean and prevent matting; the fur may also need to be trimmed to keep it looking neat.
