Korat cats are among the most popular pedigree cats among cat lovers. Here you will find the most important information about the Korat.

Origin Of The Korat

The Korat is one of the oldest natural cat breeds. In addition to the well-known Siam, the representatives of the Korat also lived in Thai monasteries during the Ayudhya period (1350 to 1767).

In her homeland of Thailand, the Korat used to be called “Si-Sawat” (Sawat = luck and prosperity) and was highly coveted by the nobility. Happiness was perfect for lovers and the rich blessings of children were certain when the bride received a lucky cat from her mother as a gift for her marriage, which she placed directly on the couple’s wedding bed. And when he had fulfilled his “services” there and the longed-for offspring announced themselves, the tomcat was allowed to sleep in the cradle before the baby was born, before the newborn was later placed in it. The four-legged predecessor in the bed guaranteed the offspring a healthy and happy life.

The worldwide career leap of the Korat only began in 1959 – with a daring “jump across the pond” – the first breeding pair was imported into the USA. From there, an incomparable triumphant march around the world began. The Korat has been recognized by the FIFé since 1983. Although oriental breeds are popular around the world, the Korat is still a relatively rare breed outside of Thailand.

The Appearance Of The Korat

The Korat is unique with its oriental shape, heart-shaped face, and silver-blue fur. She is of medium height, medium weight, and muscular behind her gentle curves. The hind legs are slightly longer than the front legs, the tail is of medium length. The eyes of the Korat are very large and round. The cats are only fully grown when they are around four years old, by then the color of their eyes has changed from yellow to bright green. The eyes are wide apart. Korat has a broad, flat forehead. The ears are large, set high, and have rounded tips.

Its appearance is therefore reminiscent of the Russian Blue, the main differences being that it is smaller and more delicate, has a heart-shaped face, and has no undercoat.

Coat And Colors Of The Korat

The Korat’s fur is short, silky, finely shiny, and has no undercoat. It is smooth and close to the body. The color is silver blue with silver hair tips. Unlike the blue coat of many other cat breeds, the gene for the blue color of the Korat is inherited dominantly. Rarely, natural variants of the Korat in the lilac color (“Thai lilac”) are said to occur (not recognized). The pads and nose leathers are dark blue or lavender.

The Temperament Of The Korat

The Korat adapts happily and surprisingly sensitively to the wishes and needs of people. She easily fits into the daily routine and habits of her family, without imposing their wishes or whims on their part. In character, the Korat is intelligent, attentive, and very playful.

With pronounced self-confidence, the Korat allows itself to be courted by its humans and thanks them in a loving and affectionate manner. It wants to be loved and spoiled and insists on extensive cuddling hours. She also loves to crawl under the covers at night and hug her people very tightly. Due to her playfulness and her patient nature, she is also in good hands with a family with children.

Keeping And Caring For The Korat

The Korat has adapted well to life indoors and is also happy as an indoor cat, provided it has enough space and opportunities to play. However, the Korat would definitely like to have a conspecific to play with. This breed’s silky, shiny coat requires little maintenance but should be brushed several times a week.
