The herdsman's dogs help him to guard the house, farm, and cattle and to drive them up and down. Incidentally, a very well-known cheese dairyman is Heidi's grandfather, from the popular children's cartoon series of the same name from the 70s - here, however, the alpine pasture is not guarded by a Swiss Mountain Dog but by the cartoon Saint Bernard.
