Before you bring the Great Dane indoors for a face-to-face encounter, you should have given her a good walk and let her play with toys. Do not bring the mastiff inside until it is calmer.

In the room where the encounter is to take place, there should be a way for your cat to leave the room or retreat upstairs to a cat shelf or high scratching post. Although your Great Dane may know and like cats from previous encounters, remember that your cat may not like the Great Dane.

The best place for the first encounter is a high-altitude retreat that the mastiff cannot reach. So the cat is safe and can assess the situation from an elevated position. She can also get used to the new roommate's behavior and smell.

This escape option defuses the situation for the cat. When threatened, cats raise their hair, snarl, and smack dogs' noses with extended claws. But if you provide safe retreats, your cat won't even get into fight mode.

Another method is to install a raised child safety gate with bars in the door frame. The bars should be spaced far enough for your cat to get through at a fast pace.

With this tool, you give the cat a safe escape route and the dog is prevented from chasing the cat.

But make sure that your cat stays inside the house or apartment. If she can escape all the way outside, she may run away and not come back for a few hours or days. For many cats, new roommates are uncomfortable and disturbing at first, so they could avoid the conflict situation by running away for the time being.

Bring the Great Dane into a room in a calm state. When the dog is calm, bring the cat in on your arm. Keep your distance and give the cat and dog time to see each other from a distance.

Bring them together slowly. It is best to do this with two people. One takes care of the dog, the other is responsible for the cat. Make sure both animals are calm before approaching them ever closer. Use calming gestures and voice. Reward both—especially the dog—with treats when he exhibits the desired behavior. Keep getting closer and closer until both animals have carefully sniffed each other. Now go back a little. Put the cat on the ground and make sure the scenery stays still. Some cats don't like being held. If your cat is one of them, you must perform the above procedure with the cat on the floor, not in your arm.

Even if the first meeting was a great success, never leave the two animals alone for the next few weeks. The two should always initially meet under supervision. Again, it is important that both remain calm. And you, as the owner, have to be patient.
