Japanese Chin

In the year 732 the first Chin ancestor is said to have lived at the Japanese royal court, he was a gift from the Korean ruler. Find out everything about the behavior, character, activity and exercise needs, training, and care of the Japanese Chin dog breed in the profile.

Apparently, the animal was so popular that in the following years a large number of these dogs were brought to Japan and the animals began to be bred. In 1613 the first Chin entered Europe, and in 1853 Queen Victoria was given two specimens. After that, the Chin experienced a triumph as a house dog and lapdog for women in high society.

General Appearance

A small and elegant dog, with a plentiful coat of hair and a broad facial skull. The fur is very fine, long, and feels like silk. Various color variants are possible, including white, black, yellow, brown, black, and white or ochre.

Behavior and temperament

Aggression is completely alien to this dog, he is fully attuned to love. He is happy about encounters with humans and animals, wants to be close to his owner, and “insists” on extensive cuddles. It is said that he has the wisdom and pride of a monkey, the loyalty and reliability of a dog, and is as affectionate and quiet as a cat.

Need for employment and physical activity

The Japanese Chin is ideal for dog lovers who have little space or who can no longer walk as much, for example for health reasons. This dog is happy about a long walk but is also happy with shorter trips if he is allowed to romp around in the apartment with a ball afterward.

Upbringing

The Japanese Chin is very docile and willing to learn. So his owners should definitely educate and train him because he really enjoys it!

Maintenance

The fine coat requires regular and intensive care, daily brushing is a must.

Disease Susceptibility / Common Diseases

The short snout can cause breathing problems, but otherwise, the breed is very robust.
