Jack Russell Terrier – Bright Hunter

Jack Russell Terriers are one of those breeds that bear the name of their breeder. It was a pastor and hunter John Russell, more commonly known as “Jack”, who used a White Rough-Haired Terrier female named “Trump” to breed this breed of dog for hunting foxes. The dogs had to be able to run alongside the horse and be confident enough to defend themselves against pursued animals, but their main job was to drive the foxes out of their den.

In the early 19th century, this breeding project produced two dogs of different sizes, each considered a breed in its own right according to today’s FCI standard. On the one hand, there were Jack Russell Terriers with a maximum height of 30 centimeters at the withers, and on the other hand, the larger, square-built Parson Russell Terriers.

Both breeds are currently popular companion dogs.

General

  • FCI Group: Terriers
  • Section 2: Short Legged Terriers
  • Size: 25 by 30 centimeters
  • Colours: Predominantly white with black, tan, or tan markings.

Activity

Jack Russell Terriers need a lot of exercise and love to frolic. Sometimes they do not want to stop at all, which can confuse many owners.

Therefore, it is very important to give our four-legged friends plenty of physical as well as mental support to keep them balanced and fully utilized. Long walks and sports such as agility, trekking, or frisbee are ideal for keeping active terriers in shape. But at home, there should also be a lot of games and enough activity. A Jack Russell who is bored can quickly come up with silly ideas to entertain himself.

Features of the Breed

Due to their original purpose as working terriers and hunting dogs, the flamboyant four-legged friends are bold, self-confident, and courageous. They also have a strong hunting instinct, so owners should always make sure that the dog does not hide in the undergrowth to chase the rabbit.

In addition, Jack Russell Terriers are intelligent and especially agile. However, in general, Jack Russell Terriers are friendly, playful, and ready to work.

Recommendations

Jack Russells need a lot of exercise, the exercise of physical and mental activity. So you must have enough time and desire to exercise or play with your dog.

As with many dogs, a house with a garden would be ideal – here a lively four-legged friend could blow off steam between walks. However, the maintenance of the apartment is also possible, provided that appropriate long walks and additional use of dog sports are offered.

In addition, the Jack Russell Terrier should be given to experienced dog owners who can consistently assert themselves against smart bursts of energy despite loving training. In addition, the owner should enjoy the fuss, games, and work with a new family member.
