Origine del Kuvasz

Officially, Hungary is listed as the country of origin of Kuvasz. The herding dog originally comes from Asia and came to Hungary from there.

The name Kuvasz comes from the terms Kawash or Kawass and means something like “protector” or “guardian”. As early as the Middle Ages, the Kuvasz was an integral part of the hunting party and guardian of houses and farms. During the reign of the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus, the watchful four-legged friend was increasingly regarded as a very popular dog among the nobility.

At the beginning of the 20th century, targeted Kuvasz breeding began, which reached its lowest point in 1956: During the Hungarian uprising, many of the herding dogs were shot.

Today, the Kuvasz is considered a rare dog breed. The number of newborn Kuvasz puppies in Germany is 50 animals per year.
