All dogs carry the Demodex mite. The mother passes this mite on to the puppies in the first days of their lives. Torsion occurs when the stomach is bloated, or filled with air, and twists. The dog is unable to burp or throw up to get rid of the excess air in its stomach, and blood flow to the heart is difficult. Blood pressure drops and the dog goes into shock.

There is some evidence that the tendency to have torsion is hereditary, so dogs with the condition should be spayed or neutered.
