How You Can Prevent Constipation in Your Cat

Constipation can be very uncomfortable for your cat. With these tips and tricks, you can prevent indigestion. Very important: sufficient liquid and exercise.

Constipation in cats is a common problem that you can prevent with the right measures. If your cat is prone to constipation, there are a few basic tips to keep in mind.

Prevent Constipation: Lots of Fluids

Lots of exercise and lots of fluids are important. Ideally, your house tiger is allowed to roam free – so it rages, plays, and runs enough automatically. But you can also encourage your cat to exercise more indoors, for example with toys. Even cats who are lazy about drinking should drink enough fluids. If you can’t do this with water in the bowl, give the velvet paw wet instead of dry food. Also, make sure that the food has a high fiber content – this stimulates digestion and thus helps to prevent constipation.

Tips for Healthy Cat Digestion

If you already know that your cat is prone to constipation and has regular defecating problems, you can add a little oil to her food once in a week or so. You can use vegetable oil for this or give her some tuna in oil. As an exception, you can also give your four-legged friend a little milk if problems are imminent, as it can have a laxative effect and thus prevent constipation.

Proper grooming of the coat can be crucial for long-haired cats. Cut the hair around the anus short regularly. Otherwise, you run the risk of the hair knotting and getting into the opening so that the cat can only defecate little or not at all.
