How Good is a Cat’s Memory?

Cats are clever animals – there is no question about that for the friends of the velvet paws. But what about a cat’s memory? For example, do they store in their memories which people they particularly like and which they don’t?
Does cat memory work like human memory? Can cats store and retrieve images and episodes from their past as we do? Unfortunately, it is not possible to read the mind of the mysterious velvet paws. But we do know quite a bit about how a cat’s memory works.

Do Cats Have Good Memories?

Like humans, cat memory is divided into short-term and long-term memory. In their episodic long-term memory, they store individual experiences and adventures. The house tigers are primarily very pragmatic. That is, they primarily remember things related to food or otherwise useful to them. The cat knows when the owner normally fills its bowl with food. Your cat also has a spatial memory and saves where its food bowl and litter box are and where the cat flap is located.

In addition, your cat stores other important information about its territory and home in its memory. For example, she remembers which dogs in the neighborhood could be dangerous for her and which of her own kind she should avoid.

In addition, cats have very good motor memory. Your kitty knows exactly that if she lifts her front paws over an obstacle, she must do the same with her back paws.

Do Cats Remember Humans?

Sometimes it seems cats recognize people they haven’t seen in a while. An example: the adult daughter drops by to visit the family, your cat has known her since she was little and used to play with her a lot. In this case, it usually doesn’t take long for the cat to stroke his old friend’s legs.

Conversely, the cat can store memories of when certain people have treated them badly. As soon as such a person runs into the kitty again, the velvet paw crawls away. In the worst case, it can even lead to an anxiety disorder.

The question now is whether your cat stores certain smells, sounds, voices, and visual characteristics in its memory consciously or unconsciously. Does the kitty react spontaneously when she perceives familiar smells, sounds, or characteristics or does she know that she is remembering something? Unfortunately, the answer to this will probably remain her secret.
