#10 The somewhat awkward-sounding breed name “Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever” provides information about both the homeland and the type of use of this hunting dog breed.
The "duck-attracting retriever from Nova Scotia" originated in eastern Canada, more precisely in the maritime province of Nova Scotia on Canada's Atlantic coast. The peninsula was first settled by the French in the 17th century, at that time still under the name Acadia. But England also laid claim to the east coast of Canada. The French settlers were gradually pushed out by Scottish immigrants, who eventually gave the region the name "Nova Scotia" = Nova Scotia.

What is certain is that in the 17th century, Scottish immigrants were amazed at the behavior of some local foxes, who seemed to be playfully romping around on the banks of rivers and lakes, thereby attracting curious ducks so that they could finally capture and eat them. This very special behavior was wanted to be used for hunting and dogs began to be bred that could also learn such a "tolling".

Because these were also used for duck hunting in Holland centuries ago and show similar behavior.
