#4 The Saint Bernard has achieved many firsts throughout its history and one of these was that it was the first breed of dog registered by the Swiss Stud Club.

#5 The name by which this breed is now known is the Saint Bernard and this name comes from the monks of the Saint Bernard monastery from the hospice at the St. Bernards Great Pass who kept the dogs for rescue missions in the Alps.

#6 As one of the largest dog breeds, a Saint Bernard is classified as a giant dog breed. The average healthy adult will reach a height at the withers of between 28 and 35 inches. A Saint Bernard’s average weight is usually between 140 and 260 pounds.
