A farm used to consist of a farmhouse, a stable with animals, and a barn for hay, straw, and machines. The farmer lived with his family in the farmhouse. The farmer’s wife and children helped everywhere as much as their time and strength permitted. The family worked on their own land, or they had rented it, one also says: leased.
Potatoes and grain were grown on the farm for the people. But also grass and other plants as animal feed, to make milk or meat. There were also eggs, fruit, vegetables, maybe wine, and other products.
Such farms have become increasingly rare: there were more animals, more land, more machines, and therefore fewer workers. The family works less and less. On many farms, there is only a smaller number of products, but there are larger quantities of them.
