The Papillon is one of two varieties of the Continental Toy Spaniel dog breed. While the Papillon is recognizable by its erect ears, the Phalene, the second variety, has floppy ears. And although they look different from each other, their history of origin and, therefore, their current behavior are almost identical.
Although it is not known exactly where the Continental Toy Spaniel came from, it is assumed that it originated in Europe. Apparently, at that time it was intended to breed a dwarf form of the Spaniel, intended for hunting, which could then serve as a domestic companion dog for children and women at home.
It has been proven that the Continental Miniature Spaniel has existed since the 13th century because some paintings from this period can be found showing a small four-legged friend in the presence of high-ranking people.
Only from the 17th century did the Papillon appear in portraits, that is, the pointed-eared version.
Like all smaller dogs such as the Bichon and Pug, the Papillon’s glory days ended with the fall of the French nobility. But enthusiasts from France and Belgium, who took up its breeding, could also save this breed from extinction.

Activity
Although one of the companion dogs, the Continental Miniature Spaniel is very active and hardy. The pedigree of Spaniels that were kept as hunting dogs is sometimes leaked here.
In this way, small search games can be easily integrated into walks. It doesn’t always have to be a big tour, but longer laps should be planned from time to time.
The brightly colored Toy Spaniel also loves to mess with other dogs off the leash. Since it also gets along well with other dogs and is considered easy to train, you should pamper with this from time to time.
Features of the Breed
Although they are small, noble, and proud companion dogs, Continental Toy Spaniels don’t want to lie on a golden cushion all day. They are very active, agile, and cheerful, wanting to play and cuddle a lot, but are usually not necessarily assertive. Because Papillons and Phalenes are also very sensitive and therefore keenly feel the feelings of their people. If the owner wants to rest, the dog often notices this and retreats accordingly.
Because of this sensitive nature, a harmonious environment is important for the breed. Because when negative feelings spread in the family, the four-legged friend quickly suffers along with his people.
Recommendations
The Continental Toy Spaniel is suitable for apartment keeping, but requires a fair amount of exercise, and sometimes more than some other companion dogs. So there should already be some time to play and run around. However, it also enjoys long hugs with its people or just lies with them.
Thanks to his friendly, playful, and attentive nature, it is also well suited as a family dog and for people who would like to be physically active with their dog but do not want to travel miles of bike tours or agility courses.
