Chihuahua Big Belly – What Does It Mean?

The Chihuahua’s chest is usually deep and the belly line is slightly raised. According to the breed standard, a loose belly is permissible but undesirable.

If your Chihuahua has a straight or even bulging belly line, there can be various reasons behind it:

  • Puppies often have a round, slightly bloated stomach after eating. They are simply “full”. This is harmless.
  • But sometimes there is a worm infestation behind a big belly, which should definitely be treated. Due to the colonization of the intestines with the parasites, the stomach appears bloated. Otherwise, the dog does not appear overweight.
  • It’s different if you’re actually overweight. Here not only the belly, but the four-legged friend as a whole is too fat. So the Chihuahua no longer has a waist and gets fat pads at the base of the tail and the loin area. In most cases, too much food is actually the cause. Often combined with too little exercise.
  • More rarely, diseases can be behind obesity. For example tumors.
  • The wrong food can lead to flatulence and therefore to a round and bloated stomach. A change of feed would certainly make sense here.
