Care and Health of the Long-Haired Dachshund

In order to properly care for a long-haired dachshund’s coat, it should be brushed regularly so that there are no knots or tangles in the coat. In general, you should pay attention to the diet of dachshunds, as they tend to become overweight if they are not exercised enough. With good nutrition and sufficient exercise, a healthy long-haired dachshund can be expected to live between 12 and 16 years.

Unfortunately, long-haired dachshunds also have breed-specific diseases that can occur again and again. In addition to heart problems, rheumatism, or epilepsy, dachshunds tend to suffer from back problems, especially in old age, due to their unnaturally long body and short legs. One often speaks of the so-called dachshund paralysis.

Important! Because of these diseases, you should only approach reputable and conscientious long-haired dachshund breeders.

This process can be prevented by not letting the tiny dachshund puppy or weak older dog hop up and down stairs too often and carrying them instead.

Activities with the long-haired Dachshund

Because of its long physique, as mentioned earlier, the dachshund is not made for sports like agility. Repeated jumping can cause back problems in this dog breed. Search, chase, or digging games are more appropriate for a dog of this size and with such a strong hunting instinct.

Keeping them in an apartment is not a problem given the dog’s small size. If you live in a city, however, it is important that you offer your long-haired dachshund enough opportunities to exercise and dig with walks.

A long-haired dachshund is suitable as a travel dog because it is not particularly large and appears with a self-confident manner, considering which it should not show any shyness in different places.
