Gordon Setter

Like many other British hunting dogs, the Gordon Setter was bred by nobles. Find out everything about the behavior, character, activity and exercise needs, training, and care of the Gordon Setter dog breed in the profile.

Ancestors of the Gordon Setter can be seen in pictures from the 17th century. In the early 19th century, Count Alexander Gordon of Banffshire in Scotland tried to create his own breed from the dogs, which had a distinctive red and black coat. The breed was named after him, although it later became unclear whether he was actually the first to achieve the typical color as the standard setter. The actual pure breeding of the Gordon Setter only began after the middle of the 19th century.

Aparença general

The Gordon Setter is a medium to a large-sized dog whose body is perfectly proportioned. He is strong and at the same time slim and has a proud appearance. The coat is glossy and charcoal black with maroon tan. A white patch on the chest is also allowed but is very rare. Compared to the other setter species, the Gordon has more pronounced lips and a heavier head.

Comportament i temperament

Of all three types of setter, the Gordon Setter is the calmest and most even-tempered. He is very confident and never as wild or nervous as Irish Setters often are. With his loving and balanced nature, he is nevertheless a typical representative of the setter breeds. In Germany, it is rarely found in this country, and if so, then mostly in the hands of hunters. If the strong-nerved and well-balanced dog is sufficiently busy, it is also suitable as a family pet.

Necessitat d'ocupació i activitat física

If they are not used for hunting, Gordon Setters absolutely need a balance through hiking, dog sports, tracking, or other work. They must also be allowed to exercise themselves physically on long walks. These dogs are not suitable for keeping in a city apartment because of their size, but above all because of their strong urge to move. You should definitely be able to offer them a house with a garden.

Criança

Because of its strong hunting instinct, this dog requires a lot of practice and work. Even if the dog is willing to learn and docile, the owner still has to invest a lot of time in training. Therefore, the dog is only suitable for people who prove to be very consistent on this point.

manteniment

Regular brushing is necessary to maintain the coat’s natural shine. Eyes and ears should be checked regularly, and the balls of the feet should be cared for with special products if necessary.

Susceptibilitat a les malalties / Malalties comuns

Dogs from hunting breeds are generally healthier, in “beauty breeds” HD can occur frequently. In old age, the animals have a tendency to have tumors on the skin.

Sabia vostè?

The enthusiasm of the first breeder, Count Gordon of Banffshire, for the black and red coat color was not just a question of taste: thanks its coat, the dog is perfectly camouflaged, especially in autumn, and can therefore sneak up on the prey better. Especially in the forest and on harvested fields, he is hard to be seen – much to the chagrin of his current owners.
