#4 In 1908 dog fighting was banned in Japan and the Akita continued to be bred as a large breed of dog. In 1931, the Japanese government designated nine particularly breed-typical specimens as Japan’s natural monuments.

#5 However, in the raw material shortages of World War II, the government ordered the confiscation and killing of dogs used to make clothes.

#6 The only exceptions were German shepherds, which were used for military purposes. Some cunning breeders then crossed Akitas with German shepherds to protect their beloved pets from death.
