Basil: What You Should Know

Basil is a plant used as a spice in cooking. Especially in Italian dishes like pizza and pasta sauces you can find a lot of basil, also uncooked tomatoes. In Italian, it is called Basilico. Originally, the plant only grew in Asia and Africa. Ever since seafarers brought basil to Europe, it has been planted everywhere.

Basil grows in the ground or in pots filled with potting soil. It grows up to 60 centimeters high. The leaves are mainly used for cooking. The stems are also edible. The taste of the basil is peppery, almost a little like cloves. It is used fresh or dried.

Many people today have a pot of basil in the kitchen so they can always help themselves. You have to be careful with pots on the balcony or in the garden: Since the basil comes from the warmer south, it does not tolerate frost. So it must not freeze in the cold, otherwise, it will die immediately.
