Australian Cattle Dog – Loyal Companion & Protector

As the name suggests, this breed was originally bred for herding cattle. Not only is their behavior similar to that of a herding dog, but their appearance is also designed for hard work. The Australian Cattle Dog is a medium-sized dog, ranging from 43 to 51 centimeters (maximum weight 25 kilograms). Its appearance – pronounced musculature – also indicates strength.

General

  • FCI Group 1: Shepherd and Cattle Dogs (excluding Swiss Mountain Dogs).
  • Section 2: Herding Dogs
  • Height: 46 to 51 centimeters (males); 43 to 48 centimeters (females)
  • Colors: red speckled, blue, blue speckled, blue speckled – each with tawny (burgundy, gold, or mahogany) markings.

Activity

The Australian Cattle Dog is ideal for manual labor – and he needs it too. Such a dog is by no means satisfied with a few minutes of exercise a day. Therefore, if you are not exactly a herder, but would like to get an Australian Cattle Dog, you should plan on a few hours of walks a day, as well as dog sports, such as agility.

Racial Traits

In general, shepherd dogs are alert, obedient, intelligent, and courageous. They guard their flock with special devotion. Due to their pronounced guarding instinct, they usually look at strangers with suspicion. On the other hand, under the guidance of a strong (but loving) hand, they can be completely obedient and reliable comrades, accepting and fulfilling new assignments and tasks with great joy.

Recommendations

An Australian Cattle Dog should never be kept in a small apartment in a big city. If possible, a house with a garden should be available – but at least a large forest or open field nearby – so that strong four-legged friends can also work out accordingly. There should also be enough time for long walks (or cycling) and sports with the dog.

In addition, this breed is recommended for experienced dog breeders who can make a loving but clear statement. Males, in particular, are very concerned about hierarchy, and some of them will not tolerate weak leadership and will dance on the nose of their owners.

However, if you can assert yourself, give clear instructions, and have enough time to keep the Australian Cattle Dog physically and mentally occupied, you are sure to find him a loyal companion and protector.
