The bobcat is the North American relative of our European lynx. The two species are very similar in appearance. Typical are the brushes on the ears, the sideburns, the short tail, and the more or less blotchy coat markings. A very clear distinguishing feature is therefore the size and weight of the two species. While our European lynx can grow to a length of up to 150 cm (SRL) and weigh up to 30 kg, the bobcat is a real lightweight with a maximum SRL of 105 cm and a weight of just 18 kg.
The bobcat’s diet consists exclusively of meat. The nocturnal hunter mainly hunts hares and rabbits, but also small rodents, birds, and reptiles. Occasionally he also beats deer. After the meal is complete, it covers the large carcass with snow or earth to hide it from other predators. For up to two weeks, the velvet paw keeps coming back to the crack to continue eating.
Like many cats, bobcats are solitary animals who only meet to mate and then go their separate ways. The female alone is responsible for raising the young, who stay with her for eight months after they are born in May before they look for their own territories. In zoological keeping, lynxes have proven to be very socially compatible, so that the fathers often remain with the young animal rearing.
