Blossom: Wat jy moet weet

The flower is a part of certain plants. Seeds, which can be found in fruit, grow from the flower. From these new, similar plants develop. The flower serves the plant primarily for reproduction.

There are two groups of flowers: In one group there are both the male and the female parts in the flower. Such plants are called hermaphrodites. These include, for example, apples or tulips. In the other group, the flowers are either male or female. If both grow on the same plant, they are called monoecious. Examples are the pumpkins. If the female and male flowers grow separately on different plants, they are called dioecious. This is the case, for example, with willows.

The largest and most striking part of the flowers is the colored petals, which we often call petals. They are designed to attract insects. However, flowers can also be so small that we humans do not even notice them. There are such small flowers in cereals as wheat, rice, corn, and many others.

Humans owe the majority of their nutrition to flowers, for example, fruit. Trees are flowering plants. We also have them to thank for the wood. Even cotton comes from a flowering plant. We use it to make fabric for jeans and other garments.

How do seeds come from flowers?

How are flowers pollinated?

Insects mostly do pollination. The flowers attract them with their color, scent, and nectar. Nectar is a sugary juice on the stigma. When collecting nectar, pollen sticks to the insects. On the next flower, part of the pollen is shed again on the stigma.

However, there are also flowers that can do this without insects: the wind whirls the pollen through the air and some pollen grains get on the stigma of other flowers of the same species. That is enough for pollination. This is the case with grain, among other things.

In the case of date palms, even humans assist in pollination: the dating farmer climbs onto the female plants and pollinates the stigmas with a branch of a male plant.
