Whether you are planning to rent or buy an apartment or villa, it is important to find a dog-friendly area that suits your lifestyle. Veterinarians and pet stores are almost everywhere – but there are other things that are important and that can be the details that determine if it is the right neighborhood for you.
1. Sidewalks
Although it is easy to think that sidewalks are a “nice to have” feature, if you are a dog owner, put this at the top of your must-have list. Wide, well-paved, lighted sidewalks are essential for pleasant walks near your home, especially in the early morning or late evening hours.
2. Trash cans
If you live in a suburb, we do not judge you if you throw your dog poop bag in the neighbor’s trash can. Although not all neighbors like it. Garbage cans everywhere, however, are much appreciated by dog owners who prefer not to carry dog poop bags for the entire long walk. So you will find an area with plenty of bins, and maybe with dog poop bags in place, you know you have made the right choice.
3. Dog-friendly restaurants
Many restaurants, but not all, nowadays welcome dogs, and sometimes there may even be dog-friendly menu options. Find neighborhoods where these are located because it’s nice if the dog can come along for a coffee or dinner.
4. Other dogs
Perhaps the best indicator of a dog-friendly area is the presence of other dogs. Check out your desired neighborhood early in the morning (before those working 9-5 have left for the day). If you see happy dogs taking their man for a walk, you probably fit in with your doggy too. Aside from the number of dogs, take a look at the breeds, along with their overall well-being. Happy, healthy dogs with a balanced temperament can signal that this is where your future home is.
5. Dog kennels
Dog kennels in the neighborhood or near the home can be an added asset. Here you can meet dog friends both for yourself and the doggie. And here dogs can run loose all year round! Often these are also located near a dog club or working dog club where you can train or take inspiring courses.
6. Water bowls
If your local area is dog-friendly, you will see bowls filled with clean, freshwater outside shops and companies.
