First-time visitors to the Florida Keys will immediately notice the island chain’s unique laid-back vibe – worlds away from crowded cities and theme parks. It is this relaxed, laid-back lifestyle that once drew famous writer Ernest Hemingway to settle in Key West from 1929-1938. The island’s lush subtropical nature and cheerfully boisterous residents inspired Hemingway. It was here that he wrote some of his best-known works, including For Whom the Bell Tolls, To Have and Have Not, and The Snows of Kilimanjaro. Hemingway’s then home, which is still inhabited by the descendants of his six-toed cats, is now a museum that reflects Hemingway’s literary legacy and his love of the Key West lifestyle.
The Florida Keys jut out into the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico south of Miami. The islands are connected to each other and to the American mainland by the Overseas Highway and 43 bridges – the longest of which is seven miles (more than eleven kilometers) long. The Florida Keys are divided into five localities: Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key, and Key West. Each place has its own specific character and offers numerous attractions such as museums, flora and fauna, seafood restaurants, fishing, diving, water sports, and shopping.
The landscape of the Florida Keys is dominated by emerald green lagoons, the deep blue ocean, swaying palm trees, rustling pine trees, and olive green mangrove forests. In this natural paradise, the traveler encounters white herons, pink spoonbills, pelicans, seagulls, ospreys, and anyone who wants can immerse themselves in a colorful underwater world.
The waters around the 200-kilometer-long chain of islands, including their “flats” (shallow coastal waters), mangrove islands, and coral reefs, have been declared the “Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary”.
