21 Essential Training Tips for Labrador Owners

#7 Don’t hesitate to postpone something until tomorrow

While there is a well-known saying, "Don't put off until tomorrow what you can get today," this doesn't apply to puppy training.

Sometimes your pup just isn't in the mood. Other days, you might not be ready to put on a happy face and exercise with an angel's patience. In such situations, if you postpone training for one day, you will not cause any damage.

In fact, some studies have shown that dogs don't need to be exercised every day to excel at obedience training. If you don't train for a day, what you have learned is not immediately forgotten.

However, you should still pay attention to your dog on the “non-training” days. Get out a toy and play with it. Or let him romp outside at a large park or dog run.

Sometimes it's just best to skip a training session and start over for a day or two. But remember, still end the training on a positive note, even if it's with a different command.

#8 Stick to a schedule

That's something that's really important. You should exercise at the same times every day. Even if things don't always work out (see above), you should still have a fixed schedule. This way, you won't put off training because you forgot, and your Labrador will know exactly when "class time" is.

This is how your puppy learns that you can be counted on. They regularly take him for walks, play with him and train with him.

I think morning routines and evening routines are the most important. Other family members or friends may need to help to keep the schedule.

A neighbor or a child in your circle of friends may be able to drop by during your extended absence and make sure you stick to your schedule. This is how you give your dog a reliable routine.

#9 Repeat, repeat, repeat

Repetition is the key to constant learning. This applies to everyone, human and animal.

Even after a puppy has learned a skill or command, you'll need to repeat the process multiple times before your Lab has mastered it. But even if he knows a command, you have to repeat it at regular intervals so that your dog remembers it.

Use treats. Although some owners hesitate because they are afraid that their puppy will only eat treats. But especially with young dogs, the biggest challenge is getting their attention and giving praise at the right time.

Positive training techniques are increasingly being proven in scientific studies. You should at least try this approach.
