#1 The country of origin of the poodle is actually unclear: while the FCI determines the origin of the breed in France, other breeding associations and encyclopedias such as the Encyclopædia Britannica think it is in Germany.
#2 What is undisputed, however, is the descent from the Barbet and the actual use of the earliest poodle representatives – they were retrieving hunting dogs specializing in water hunting of wild birds.
#3 The breed’s German name comes from the obsolete word “puddeln,” meaning “splash in the water.”
However, there are also so-called sheep poodles, a poodle used for herding, which is not recognized by the FCI.
