16 Surprising Facts About English Bulldogs

#10 Back Sneezing

This isn't really a health issue, but generally occurs when nasal fluid drips onto the bulldog's soft palate and causes it to close up. It can also happen if your bulldog has something in his nose. It sounds a lot worse than it actually is. Soothe your bulldog by petting its neck and it will be over in no time.

#11 Brachycephalic Syndrome

This condition occurs in dogs with small heads, narrowed nostrils, or distended soft palate. Your airways are blocked to varying degrees and can range from noisy or labored breathing to airway collapse.

Dogs with the brachycephalic syndrome usually snuffle and snort. Treatment depends on the severity of the disease but includes oxygen therapy as well as surgical options to widen the nostrils or shorten the soft palate.

#12 Headshake

It resembles a seizure but only affects the head. It is understood as an involuntary shaking of the head from side to side and up and down. Sometimes it's intense. The dog is conscious and understands what is happening. It can be related to low blood sugar and stress.

Breeders often recommend giving the dog some honey to get their blood sugar levels back up or distracting them to stop the shaking. If the shaking doesn't seem related to stress or over-excitement, you should take him to the vet as soon as possible to make sure the dog isn't in pain.
