The beginning of the history of the Alaskan Malamute breed is lost in the mists of time. Alaskan Malamutes are perhaps the oldest, and certainly the largest, dog in the Arctic. The breed owes its name to the Inuit tribe Malemut, who lived in Alaska.

#1 Archaeological research confirms that the breed has been used as a sled dog for the last four to six centuries.

#2 The Alaskan Malamute got its name from the name of the Inuit tribe Malemuts (Inuit are representatives of the Eskimos living in Alaska, Greenland and Canada).

#3 Although Alaskan Malamutes were crossed with other breeds, they retained their own type. Even during the gold rush, when there were attempts to breed malamutes with wolves, after re-breeding, the dogs always returned to their original type – the Alaskan Malamute.
