Do I have enough time to look after a dog and to offer him enough exercise and activity several times a day?
Do I have the financial resources to care for a dog for the next 10 to 15 years (this includes not only the costs of acquisition and the initial equipment, but also costs for veterinary care, insurance, taxes, possible surgical costs, and much more? – an average dog’s life costs between 12,000 and 20,000 euros).
Can I ensure that others will care for my Australian Shepherd and assign him chores when I am unavailable, ill, or on vacation?
Do I know that a dog often gets dirty, has diarrhea and vomiting, or other illnesses and that I have to help him?
Do the dog ownership and needs of an Australian Shepherd fit my lifestyle and do I want to spend a lot of time with him and train him consistently?

Unfortunately, you will never completely get rid of his herding or guarding instinct. How much exercise does an Australian Shepherd need? It is important that you encourage the Australian Shepherd's intelligence and play instinct through daily long walks and hikes in varied nature or through dog sports. Suitable sports include agility, dog trekking, and lunging.
If you live in a larger city and have a small apartment, the herding dog is not the best choice for you.
The Australian Shepherd always has a mind of its own due to its herding instinct; so don't be too hard on him.
In order not to steer his temperament and willingness to work into uncontrollable channels, you should set clear limits for him and teach him to take breaks.
