Great courage and down-to-earth nature are the desired temperament traits of the American Staffordshire Terrier (also: Amstaff).

The American Staffordshire Terrier has numerous lovers, but also critics. The fact is: that the breed is a real muscle pack and should be trained and exercised accordingly in responsible hands.

#1 This American dog breed has officially been around since 1935, so it’s relatively young in general terms.

#2 The ancestors are both old English bulldogs and terriers.

These were mated by North American coal miners for use in illegal dog fights until the late 19th century.

So there are still some parallels in terms of physique between the American Staffordshire Terrier and the English bulldog.

#3 The Amstaff has suffered from its history and the associated reservations to this day – in many places the breed is classified by the legislature as a dangerous dog breed.
