12 Interesting Facts About Airedale Terriers You Probably Didn't Know

The Airedale Terrier breed is a trusting jack of all trades: a trusting and friendly family dog, and a bold and hardworking partner in the service.

Because of its size, the Airedale Terrier is also known as the “king of terriers”. His distinguishing traits include intelligence as well as self-confidence and occasionally a bit of stubbornness.

#1 The breed originally comes from the former English county of Yorkshire – this relationship is also reflected in the name of the breed, which can be roughly translated as “the valley (=dale) of the Aire”.

In the past, the dogs from the English river areas of the Aire, Wharfe, and Calder were referred to as "Waterside Terriers" before the name commonly used today prevailed.

#2 The Airedale Terrier most likely originated from crossing the Otterhound with medium-sized English Terriers, as well as crossing Gordon Setters and Scottish Shepherds, which made them excellently qualified for (otter)hunting as well as making good herding and tracking dogs.

#3 Later, the willing terrier established itself throughout Europe as the ideal service dog for the military and police, especially in Great Britain and Russia.
