The city chronicle names the city councilor Heinrich Essig (1808-1887) as the breeder of the Leonberger dog. Out of love for his hometown, he set himself the task of breeding a new breed of dog that would come as close as possible to the lion in the town’s coat of arms.
To do this, he crossed a black and white spotted Newfoundland female (Landseer) with a St. Bernard dog and allowed the offspring to breed with each other over 4 generations. The result was not quite what he had imagined. That’s why he crossed in a white Pyrenean mountain dog. In 1846 the first “Leonberger” was born.
The Leonberger dog is a large, strong, muscular, and elegant dog with a harmonious physique and self-confident calmness with a lively temperament. The abundantly long coat is lion yellow to reddish-brown, dark to black hair tips are allowed and the mask is black.
With their calm, even-tempered nature, the Leonbergers are very popular far beyond Germany as ideal companions, guardians, and family dogs.
