The "senn" or "Älpler" is a herdsman who tends the cattle of other farmers at times in spring and summer on his alpine pasture and tends them on his pastures. In his alpine dairy, he typically produces cheese and other dairy products from the milk obtained and sells them. The herdsman's dogs help him to guard the house, farm, and cattle and to drive them up and down. Incidentally, a very well-known cheese dairyman is Heidi's grandfather, from the popular children's cartoon series of the same name from the 70s - here, however, the alpine pasture is not guarded by a Swiss Mountain Dog but by the cartoon Saint Bernard.
