100+ Good Horse Names

The ranking of the most popular horse names is led by two names: Luna and Max. Luna, like the most popular dog and cat names, emerges as the winner of the evaluation. Max follows in second place. Sunny also made it onto the podium and took third place.

It is striking how often the top horse names are ordinary first names, such as Bella (fourth place), Moritz (sixth place), or Ronja (ninth place). An exception is Lady. The English word for “lady” is also often used in conjunction with another name as a double name. These are popular for horses in general – about 30 percent of the gentle giants have two names.

Looking at the three most popular horse breeds, it becomes clear that Max is the top stallion name for both the German riding horse and the Haflinger. When it comes to mare names, there is less agreement. While Luna is the winner of the overall ranking for German riding horses, it is Mona for Haflingers.

On the other hand, owners of German riding ponies, the third most popular breed of horse, prefer Sunny for male ponies and – in keeping with their sweet size – Candy for female ponies.

When comparing the most popular pony and riding horse names, some differences can be seen. For ponies, Max is the clear favorite. For riding horses it is by far Luna. This means that two names make it to the first places, which also lead the overall ranking. While Max is in second place among the riding horses, Luna only manages fifth place among the ponies. Lady is especially popular here. This horse name only barely reaches the top ten among riding horses and takes last place there.

There are also some horse names that only appear in the top ten ponies or among the top riding horses. These include Moritz (fourth place), Lucky (seventh place), and Paul (tenth place) for ponies as well as Merlin, Sam, and Amigo (places five to seven) for riding horses.

The term “nobility” is often used for thoroughbreds and warmbloods or for those horses that meet the breeding goal, such as health, strength, and a certain appearance. Thus, “nobility” is closely related to horse breeding. It is therefore not surprising that horse names that have a noble character are particularly popular. These reflect the often graceful, noble appearance of horses. For example, Prince, King, and Furst (ranks four to six) and Queen (rank eight) are among the most popular aristocratic horse names.

The most popular aristocratic horse name is the English title Lady, which is used for high-ranking people, but also for members of the royal family. This also applies to the second-placed name Don – an address from Italy. The female version, Donna, ranks third.

Names containing Don or Lady are generally appreciated. For example, Lady Sugarfoot has been awarded several times. Also popular are the horse names Lady Diana and Lady Di, which can be traced back to Princess Diana, former wife of the British heir to the throne, Prince Charles. Lady Gaga and Lady La Fee are also popular horse names with Lady. Both names refer to singers and actresses Lady Gaga and La Fee.

Horse names with Don come especially from films and operas. Don Camillo, one of the main characters of several novels and feature films entitled “Don Camillo and Peppone”, is particularly popular. Another film actor is Don Corleone – the head of an Italian mafia family from the well-known film “The Godfather”. Don Giovanni, a character from Mozart’s opera of the same name, is also popular.

Whether workhorse, show, or sport horse – the big four-legged friends have been closely connected to us humans for centuries. A healing effect is even attributed to this relationship – both for the body and for the psyche. Riding horses, for example, strengthens the back muscles, but close contact with them can also comfort our souls and help coma patients recover.
