Hundreds of years ago, the Mongols brought hunting, guard, and war dogs to China. Ancient terracotta figures and images from the Han Dynasty (206-220 AD) document the heavy-pointed type. About 100 years ago, the first Canton dogs came to England and later to the continent.
In Germany, the chow has been known since the 1920s. Name meanings are “yummy yummy” as the seafarers called all curiosities and rarities from the East, as well as Chao-Chao, synonymous with “seeing everything, very alert, very clever, very skillful” which describes the prized qualities of the hunting dog.
The “Tschau Tschau” has a pronounced self-confidence, is idiosyncratic and freedom-loving, reserved to rejecting third parties, alert but not a barker. He is devoted to his people, but never submissive. This dominant dog only follows him who understands it to be a loving, careful, and clear leader of the pack.
