10 Tips To Get Rid Of Golden Retriever Smell

#4 Brush your golden retriever’s teeth

The first guess as to where the smell could be coming from is of course your dog's coat. But the mouth is also an area where the unpleasant odor can come from.

So check your dog's teeth and gums. Dental care is an important topic, and not only when it already smells unpleasant. Experts recommend that you brush your dog's teeth 2-3 times a week.

In addition to dog toothbrushes, there are also dog treats that are suitable for dental care, such as Pedigree DentaStix or Chappi Dental dog snacks.

However, these dental dog snacks do not replace brushing your teeth. The sooner you get your dog used to brushing their teeth – if possible as a puppy – the better. Establish a routine and then brushing your teeth will no longer be a problem.

#5 Change your retriever’s diet

It's easy to forget that what you feed your dog goes hand-in-hand with what comes out of it. It's like the old adage that what goes in the front, comes out the back. Food can also be a cause of unpleasant odors.

Some dogs get bloated from certain foods. And that doesn't mean that cheap dog food is any worse than expensive ones. It depends on what your dog might not tolerate well. Or whether you are feeding him foods like vegetables or grains that he may not tolerate.

This then leads to bloating. This, in turn, leads to unpleasant-smelling gases. If your dog suddenly has flatulence where there were no problems before, you need to monitor closely whether there have been any changes in the diet or the ingredients of your food.

If nothing has changed in your diet lately and you still have problems, you should consult a veterinarian and have this clarified as a precaution.

#6 Clean your golden retriever’s bedding

Your dog's fur and teeth are obvious sources of odors. But you should not forget about his place to sleep or lie down either. Often enough your dog comes straight from outside or from the garden and lies down on his pillow. Of course, he drags all sorts of dirt into it.

Wash the cover regularly. When buying a dog bed, you should make sure that the cover is easy to remove and wash.

You should wash the dog duvet covers with hot water and vinegar or with hot water and soap to avoid bad odors. Please do not use fabric softener. It can cause skin irritation in dogs.

All parts that do not or should not fit in the washing machine should be washed or vacuumed regularly. How to make sure your dog's sleeping space is clean.
