The exact origins of the Italian mastiff, as the Cane Corso Italiano is also sometimes called, can no longer be traced today.
What is certain, however, is that it is a very old breed of dog and that similar dogs lived in Sicily and southern Italy as early as the fourth century and were used there as shepherd dogs.
Apart from that, the Roman Molosser dogs, which were used in the Roman Empire for centuries as herding and war dogs, are considered the ancestors of today’s Cane Corso Italiano.
Despite its long history, the FCI has only recognized it as an independent breed since 1996.
