The Cairn Terrier is a small dog native to Great Britain. He is one of the short-legged terriers and was originally bred for hunting. Today, the Cairn Terrier is primarily a popular companion dog that inspires its owners with a friendly and at the same time self-confident nature.
The Cairn Terrier originally comes from Scotland. There, the short-legged Jagdterrier used to be valued primarily for its versatility. They were used both as hunting dogs and guard dogs. In addition, they proved extremely useful for controlling rats and mice and protecting poultry from predators such as foxes.
Targeted breeding ultimately resulted in the four breeds West Highland White, Skye, Scottish, and Cairn Terrier from the small Scottish terriers. The latter was first presented at a dog show in 1909.
Two years later, the first breed standard for the Cairn Terrier was established. In 1912 it was finally recognized by the Kennel Club.
At the beginning of the 1930s, the first Cairn Terriers were imported to Germany, where they were not particularly widespread at first. With up to 500 new puppies per year, the small four-legged friends have now also developed into a popular companion dog breed with us.
